Milan: Legacy of Style

Milan: Legacy of Style

As Harrington Galleries grows and changes we have begun to reevaluate how our impact on community and style has evolved. We took our original role as an antique and vintage furniture dealer to a fusion of old and new pieces to bring a new contemporary look to our style.

Over the summer I went to Milan to reevaluate how and where Harrington’s “look” will go. As I toured the city going to showrooms and galleries we saw a beautiful emphasis on both old and new experiences, fazes, generations, and designs. I came to see it as The Legacy of Style.

Milan’s Legacy of Style goes far beyond its fashion and into a lifestyle one that many would say is bourgeois. However, I would argue that the community and lifestyle are fiercely protected by the creative class to enhance their legacy which comes with a price tag. We see this price as not selling out to the new and the best but rather holding onto the old while enhancing their legacy with modern aspects for a new era. Protecting legacy to preserve community is a significant aspect we seem to have lost in what once was an artistic, free love and community-inclined city of San Francisco.

The love for architecture, furniture, and design is abundant in Milan. As an outsider looking in I was taken aback by such beauty. On our tour of the city, we visited the magnificent Nilufar founded by Nina Yashar. Nilufar is a gallery of beautifully curated Mid-Century Modern spaces. Nilufar is currently at the SF FOG Design and Art Fair in Fort Mason. The FOG Design Fair is a space of contemporary art and design and a part of the larger SF bringing art and galleries from across the world.

We stayed in the most beautiful apartment located in Zona Magenta. This space had modern aspects tied in with vintage timeless pieces that exemplified the Legacy of Style in Milan. This apartment was run cohesively by Andrea in his family, who welcomed us in and made us the most delicious reservation around the corner at Tommasi filled exclusively with the Milanese creative class. In classic American fashion, we ate at 8 pm. with the rest of the restaurant filling in at 1pm.  and kids from the restaurant running around the park outside the restaurant until 1 a.m.

From walking the streets of Milan to viewing design galleries. Milan was an inspiration for the evolution of our brand and bringing our 50+year old business into its new era. We will be taking inspiration from the past through antique pieces, our signature ‘Tools of the Trade’ art series and custom sofas while bringing more modern aspects as well in the future to come. As an SF native and first generation family expanding and enhancing our legacy will always be our goal.
